John Swinney, the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, speaks to SPT Express about his recent visit to the Glasgow Subway and his views on SPT’s park and ride projects.
1) You came to visit SPT recently. What was your impression of the Glasgow Subway system?
The Subway is a true icon of Glasgow and I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit it for myself. It was clear it’s certainly a great way of getting in out of town while leaving the car at home.
2) When you visited you spent some time going through the Tunnels in the driver’s cab up front. What do you remember about that?
It was great to get a shot at driving, but thankfully the train operated automatically. It was also great to meet the staff on the front line.
3) As you know, SPT has plans to raise significant amounts of money to finance the renovation of a number of Subway stations in time for the Commonwealth Games. This will be financed in part by money SPT has raised through debt rescheduling but we also hope to raise capital through developing our land assets in partnership with the private sector. What’s your view on all of that?
I welcome these plans and SPT’s determination to ensure the 2014 Games are a success. This project demonstrates the success of our historic concordat which has given local authorities record levels of investment and more powers than ever before to invest in local priorities.
4) You recently advanced SPT £5m of funding for Park and Ride. How important do you think such projects are for easing the commute and should others follow what SPT has done?
It’s great to see 800 vehicles a day taking advantage of Shields Road park and ride. This project has made a real difference and I’ve seen its success mirrored in other schemes across the country. Park and Ride is a great way for people to get around, it’s better for the environment, and can be a lot less stressful, removing the frustration associated with the daily commute by car.
5) For the first time in history the Glasgow Subway has patrols by the British Transport Police. You met some of the officers. Your impressions?
I was very impressed. Security on the Subway is important and the British Transport Police officers do an excellent job keeping it safe for all its users.
