Transport Minister unveils first of 10 Park and Rides

December, 2009

Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson cuts the ribbon at the official opening of the new Dalreoch Park and Ride facility just outside Dumbarton.

It is the first of 10 strategic Park and Rides to be developed by SPT and was built in partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council.

The 87-space car park serves the busy rail corridor between Dalreoch and Glasgow Queen Street stations. It also links into a National Cycle Route, making it ideal for visitors to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Opening the new facility, Stewart Stevenson said: “Right across Scotland we’ve seen Park and Ride facilities being successful. This one at Dalreoch will, I’m sure, join that ever-growing family.

“SPT is working on a range of Park and Rides across Strathclyde. This one at Dalreoch, like others, creates work for those building the facility. It also supports people on their journey to work, making it an important investment for those already in employment and helps to keep people in employment.”

SPT is an excellent partner for Government and its constituent local authorities.

The Minister added: “SPT is an excellent partner for Government and its constituent local authorities. Delivering projects such as Park and Ride helps the local community, helps people with their commute to work, to leisure and to meet friends and family.

“It is a vital cog in the transport infrastructure of the West of Scotland.”

Dalreoch is the first of three new Park and Rides planned for West Dunbartonshire. Also on the cards are a £250,000 rail Park and Ride at Dumbarton Central and a £300,000 bus Park and Ride at Kilbowie in Clydebank.

Chair of SPT, Councillor Alistair Watson, said: “The Government has provided £5million in advanced funding to allow us to look at strategic park and rides. Only seven months into the financial year, we delivered the first of these and there’s much more to come. This shows our ability to work closely with our partners and deliver these schemes.”
